Michael Walden’s latest exhibition is a vibrant exploration of figuration. His new works illuminate the relationship between an artist and his model. Walden’s paintings and prints capture the ease of a connection that needs no words. They are demonstrations of being.
Highlighting the process of observation, this exhibition brings viewers inside Walden’s studio – perhaps even inside the artist’s mind – showing us his focus on the plays of light and color, the tensions between surface and pattern. Like the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the midcentury, Walden explores his subject through the process of abstraction and obfuscation. Surprises lead the way to new discoveries.
Rather than erotic, his art evokes both a physical and cerebral calm. Andrew Wyeth, who created countless works of Helga Testorf explained “I can’t work completely out of my imagination— I must put my foot in a bit of truth—and then I can fly free.” Walden’s model, likewise, seems to bring him to the doorway of his own imagination.
Walden received an MFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, an MFA in Art Education from Boston University, and a BFA from the University of Framingham, MA. His solo exhibition at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in Manhattan was followed by extensive showings throughout New England. He has been awarded multiple artist residencies at the Fine Arts Work Center and the Vermont Studio Center. Walden lives and works in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York City.
